Description

Wise speech depends on our view and intention, as well as our capacity to listen inwardly and outwardly.  This talk explores Wise Listening as the first gesture of Wise Speech, and how we might practice listening in a way that allows us to let go of what no longer serves (renunciation), and cultivates openness towards ourselves and others (non-ill will, or kindness).

Homework

In your more formal silent practice, experiment with approaching meditation as an act of listening, rather than a technique to master.  With openness and curiosity, what do you 'hear' in the body and in the heart-mind?  In listening to the process of listening itself?

With others, is it possible to be interested in what prevents our own full-bodied listening when someone else is speaking?  Some possibilities among many:  getting hooked or stuck at the level of words, assuming we already know the other person or what they are saying, and the act of comparison or self-positioning.  Consider that it can be an act of caring for our own minds as well as others' to not fully follow these proliferations.
