Satipatthana Sutta, Introduction: From Mindfulness to Awareness

Description

Mindfulness is the tool, awareness is the result. All we need to do to convert the tool into the result is get out of the way.

Homework

Observe the effort within your mindfulness practice. Notice how much of your awareness is self-driven (fabricated) and how much is accessed through relaxation and ease (nonfabricated)? What motivates self-driven mindfulness? Is it a sense of something incomplete or lacking in your life? Is it based on an emotion, mood, or attitude? What happens when you turn your mindfulness to that motivating emotion itself, noticing the sense of incompletion rather than acting from it?  Relax all resistance and narrative around that emotion and see if awareness springs forth from the nonresistance.
