This month we will be practicing with Patience (khanti in Pali). These first two weeks are about investigating the nature of patience and how it can provide greater support in our own lives. Patience is the habit of being patient. It is a conscious choice or willingness to investigate our difficulties and/or challenges in life to understand the nature of suffering. We willingly turn towards our troubles again and again until it becomes habit. One way to allowing this willingness to turn towards suffering is to consider patience as a gift rather than an obligation. Over the next two weeks, pay attention to your everyday experiences. How much are you striving to fix, change or resolve problems? How often do you feel you are having to “put up” with something? How quickly do you get out of difficult situations? What would it mean to allow difficulties or problems to linger? See if you can become aware of the mental torment inherent in problems and difficulties.
