Description

To love all beings we must love all aspects of our own mind and body experience.

Homework

Metta is love of all things seen and unseen and includes yourself and others. The person is not passed over. Idiosyncrasies of the individual do not get in the way of spiritual love. Real love springs forth once the projected obstacles are removed. This week pick someone who is present in your life and seems difficult or impossible to love. Rather than forcing the love, investigate what stands in its way. Why do you have trouble connecting with this person? This person may have a character flaw or pattern that you push away in yourself. He or she may bring up an emotion that you are not comfortable feeling. The person may be deceitful, manipulative, or have the intention to harm, and you are afraid of getting drawn in. His or her energy may be judgmental or complaining and difficult to be around. See where the real problem resides. This person, like you, is in pain. Say to yourself when obstacles arise, “Is there love for this too?” See through the pain, first touching his/her humanity and then experiencing the stillness that underlies it all.
