This month we will be exploring the Right Intention. Right Intention is the second half of the Wisdom section of the Eightfold Path. It is a necessary step before looking into conduct. Cultivation of Right Intention means looking at what is propelling our actions. Like Right View last month, Right Intention looks at what conditions our actions. When our actions are conditioned on greed, hatred (aversion) or delusion – there is suffering. If, on the other hand, our actions are conditioned on non-harm, goodwill and restraint of the senses – we can experience blamelessness. Last month, we looked at the long-term consequences of our actions, perceptions and choices. This month, we will pay attention to the immediate consequences of action. See if you can become aware of the limitations of constantly chasing after sensual pleasure. Consider substituting getting what you want with renunciation. Practice substituting Metta during periods of anger or aversion. Take note of what happens in the mind and body. Throughout the month, pay attention to your actions. Consider what action would cause no harm or the least amount of harm. This month – see if you can get up-close and personal with the nature of harm and reflect on what a blameless life would truly look like.
