The Satipatthana Sutta (the Four Foundations of Mindfulness) is one of two primary instruction teachings on mindfulness that the Buddha offered. The satipatthana on being mindful of the body can easily be underestimated as a “just getting started” practice. Yet the Buddha stated that practicing any one of the four satipatthanas can lead to stream entry. Moreover, practicing mindfulness of the body leads to a number of insights and increased capacity for practice that create favorable conditions for all of vipassana practice.
