How much of your practice is mechanical? How much do you depend upon your own effort in “putting in the time” day after day and mastering the technique? Do you have strong need to get it right and not make a mistake? It is important to learn the meditation technique, but to adhere too strictly to the form of the practice masks self-doubt. Risking doing it wrong begins to move you into the art of the practice. Insight develops within the art of quiet observation free from the pressure of failure. This week let your practice be simple observation. Just look, just see what is happening. Don’t worry wbout getting it right. If you fear failure, see that. If you doubt whether you are doing it right, notice the doubting. Observing what is driving the meditation changes the mechanics of the practice into a living art form.
