Description
This is a six week cumulative class series which began May 6. Because the classes build on each other, registration closed after the second class on May 13. The next class series will begin on Tuesday, September 16 from 7 to 9 pm Pacific Time. Currently the Introduction to Meditation Class Series is offered three times a year at our University Friends Meeting House (UFM) Seattle Insight location—winter, spring, and fall, with an additional winter Eastside class. Below is general information about the Introductory Class Series at our Seattle Insight UFM site.
Teacher: Tim Geil, Guiding Teacher
Insight meditation, also known as mindfulness or vipassana meditation, comes from the Buddhist tradition. It aims to free the mind from the distortions of self-centeredness, negativity, and confusion. Seeing life as a constantly changing process, one begins to accept pleasure and pain, fear and joy, and all aspects of life, with increasing balance and equanimity.
The six-week series offers participants teachings about what insight meditation is, how it works, and how to do it. The focus is on bringing insight practice into daily life, both on and off the meditation cushion. Class elements include guided meditation, detailed teachings about meditation practice, and ample practice time, discussion, and suggestions for continuing at home. In a supportive group setting, we will explore balanced and spacious awareness.
This introductory meditation class meets weekly for six weeks, followed by a daylong meditation retreat. The class is hybrid, meaning it simultaneously meets in person and online. You have the flexibility to go back and forth between in-person and online. A zoom link will be sent to all who have registered.
Registration is required for this class.
The class will include
● Guided meditation instruction
● Sitting and walking meditation practice
● Meditation posture and techniques
● Talks and guidance on understanding the principles of meditation
● Group discussions
● Weekly practice suggestions
● Daylong meditation retreat

Registration and Sliding Scale
Affordability and access are at the heart of our values. The “suggested” donation for the six-week series is $90, which includes the day of mindfulness. A “supported” donation of $60 is also acceptable, if this better fits your budget. If you wish to support another student’s registration fees, you are invited to donate a “benefactor” donation $120 for the series. No one is turned away for lack of funds so you are also welcome to offer what is right for your circumstances by registering at the “$0 Donate at the event” level and then providing what is comfortable for you.
Please consider offering teacher dana, a term for generosity, during the course of the introductory series. None of the registration donations go to the teacher.
Because the classes build on each other, registration closes after the second class.
