DESCRIPTION:The Thursday Night Sangha (formerly Capitol Hill Meditation Group) is a drop-in group dedicated to supporting the meditation practice of people living in the Seattle area. Previous Vipassana practice and/or previous attendance at an beginning meditation class is helpful but not essential. A 30 minute sit begins at 6:30 pm with a short dharma talk and open discussion following. More information can be found on the Thursday Night Sangha page where you can also subscribe to Tuere Sala’s newsletter for monthly blog posts. \nThis year’s (2024) teaching theme will be The Paramis or The Ten Perfections \nThe Paramis are the ten states of mind\, attitude or behaviors that lead to peace. They are interrelated with each other without and are fluid\, flowing in and out of each other. Below is a general statement about each: \nGenerosity: Having a willingness to open to all things\, to share with others and contemplate abundance. \nMorality: Being willing to undertake the training to live within the 5 precepts.\nRenunciation: Cultivating the capacity to abandon our attachments. \nWisdom: Being able to see or consider the implications of the 3 Characteristics in any experience. \nEnergy: Our level of willingness to participate in mental development. \nPatience: Cultivating the capacity to stop our resistance to the truth of an experience. \nTruthfulness: Paying attention to the truthfulness of words and actions. \nResolution: The degree in which we are willing to follow our aspiration to practice. \nLovingkindness: The willingness to connect with and care about other sentient beings. \nEquanimity: Being willing to consider phenomena outside our opinions and judgments. \nDuring our regular SIMS sits on Mondays\, Thursdays and Sundays\, we will explore the Buddha’s teachings on The Paramis. To help ensure this group’s meetings are safe spaces\, please send an email with the subject: “request for Under 40 Zoom link”. \nLed by: Keri Pederson and rotating facilitators \nUnder 40 is an ongoing practice group specifically for people in their 20’s and 30’s.  The 2nd Wednesdays of the month (meets both ONLINE and IN-PERSON at UFM) are led by Keri Pederson\, and the 4th Wednesdays (ONLINE ONLY) are peer-led by rotating facilitators.  The group starts with a 30 minute sitting meditation\, with instruction offered on the 2nd Wednesdays.  An introduction to insight (vipassana) meditation\, or mindfulness meditation\, is helpful but not required. \nQuestions? \nRegistration & Donation \nNo registration is required. SUMMARY:Climate Action Group (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Description \nThe Climate Action Group at SIMS was started in May of 2018 by a few sangha members concerned about the climate crisis. We are interested in working within our sangha and from the ground of our Dhamma practice to learn\, understand\, connect\, and with wise intention and view\, take appropriate actions. \nWe meet monthly and have sponsored several programs at SIMS. We have an online bulletin board with our mission\, goals\, and meeting notes\, as well as a variety of resources to deepen understanding of the climate crisis and how to take meaningful action.  We offer “Practices for a livable planet” as one way to engage with the climate crisis as Buddhist practitioners\, and our Climate Buddies program (details below) connects sangha members for mutual support. \nSigning up to be on our email list allows access to our bulletin board and monthly invitations to attend our meetings. DESCRIPTION:Description \nThe Climate Action Group at SIMS was started in May of 2018 by a few sangha members concerned about the climate crisis. We are interested in working within our sangha and from the ground of our Dhamma practice to learn\, understand\, connect\, and with wise intention and view\, take appropriate actions. \nWe meet monthly and have sponsored several programs at SIMS. We have an online bulletin board with our mission\, goals\, and meeting notes\, as well as a variety of resources to deepen understanding of the climate crisis and how to take meaningful action.  We offer “Practices for a livable planet” as one way to engage with the climate crisis as Buddhist practitioners\, and our Climate Buddies program (details below) connects sangha members for mutual support. \nSigning up to be on our email list allows access to our bulletin board and monthly invitations to attend our meetings.
