SUMMARY:All About Boundaries with Rodney Smith (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Description\nIn this nonresidential online weekend retreat\, we will explore how and why we conceptually impose internal and external boundaries upon a world that is naturally boundary free. Each time we draw a line of demarcation internally (my body\, my mind\, my persona) or externally (others\, the external world\, nature) we establish a narrowing definition of ourselves while increasing our psychic distance from others. We believe we gain control by establishing boundaries but are usually unaware of how it restrains and limits our freedom. \nJoin Rodney on this two-day exploration of boundaries\, which will also explore the sanity of setting healthy personal boundaries and establishing principled ethical limits. The weekend will include dharma talks\, silent and guided meditations\, Q & A sessions\, and Qigong with Ellen. \nAbout Rodney Smith\nRodney Smith is a retired Insight Meditation Society (IMS) guiding teacher and retired founding and guiding teacher of the Seattle Insight Meditation Society (SIMS). A former Buddhist monk and hospice director\, he has taught meditation for over 35 years and is the author of Lessons from the Dying; Stepping Out of Self-Deception: The Buddha’s Liberating Teaching of No-Self; Awakening: A Paradigm Shift of the Heart; and Touching the Infinite: A New Perspective on the Buddha’s Four Foundation of Mindfulness. He teaches more sparingly now and spends much of his day in quiet. \nQuestions\nFor questions about the retreat\, please contact registrar@seattleinsight.org \nRegistration & Donation\nRegistration for this Retreat is required. The suggested event donations are listed below\, plus teacher dana. Dana is a term for generosity\, or freely offered giving. Dana for SIMS can be offered on our website on the Donate page. \nTo offer Dana to Rodney\, please use the this link: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/SIMSFounder. A check may also be sent to SIMs.

SUMMARY:Climate Action Group (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Description \nThe Climate Action Group at SIMS was started in May of 2018 by a few sangha members concerned about the climate crisis. We are interested in working within our sangha and from the ground of our Dhamma practice to learn\, understand\, connect\, and with wise intention and view\, take appropriate actions. \nWe meet monthly and have sponsored several programs at SIMS. We have an online bulletin board with our mission\, goals\, and meeting notes\, as well as a variety of resources to deepen understanding of the climate crisis and how to take meaningful action.  We offer “Practices for a livable planet” as one way to engage with the climate crisis as Buddhist practitioners\, and our Climate Buddies program (details below) connects sangha members for mutual support. \nSigning up to be on our email list allows access to our bulletin board and monthly invitations to attend our meetings. If you are interested in getting on our email list\, please email Ken Yasuhara. If you have questions and would like more information\, please contact Iris Antman.

SUMMARY:Thursday Night Sangha (Online)
DESCRIPTION:The Thursday Night Sangha (formerly Capitol Hill Meditation Group) is a drop-in group dedicated to supporting the meditation practice of people living in the Seattle area. Previous Vipassana practice and/or previous attendance at an beginning meditation class is helpful but not essential. A 30 minute sit begins at 6:30 pm with a short dharma talk and open discussion following. More information can be found on the Thursday Night Sangha page where you can also subscribe to Tuere Sala’s newsletter for monthly blog posts. \nThis year’s (2024) teaching theme will be The Paramis or The Ten Perfections \nThe Paramis are the ten states of mind\, attitude or behaviors that lead to peace. They are interrelated with each other without and are fluid\, flowing in and out of each other. Below is a general statement about each: \nGenerosity: Having a willingness to open to all things\, to share with others and contemplate abundance. \nMorality: Being willing to undertake the training to live within the 5 precepts.\nRenunciation: Cultivating the capacity to abandon our attachments. \nWisdom: Being able to see or consider the implications of the 3 Characteristics in any experience. \nEnergy: Our level of willingness to participate in mental development. \nPatience: Cultivating the capacity to stop our resistance to the truth of an experience. \nTruthfulness: Paying attention to the truthfulness of words and actions. \nResolution: The degree in which we are willing to follow our aspiration to practice. \nLovingkindness: The willingness to connect with and care about other sentient beings. \nEquanimity: Being willing to consider phenomena outside our opinions and judgments. \nDuring our regular SIMS sits on Mondays\, Thursdays and Sundays\, we will explore the Buddha’s teachings on The Paramis. Please join us for this rich exploration. \nSpecial Note: The Thursday Night Sangha will continue to meet on Zoom indefinitely. Please click on the link below the large ZOOM link on the Thursday Night Sangha page.  It will change weekly so be sure to go back to the page before the meeting to get the right link.

SUMMARY:Phillip Moffitt Non-residential Retreat (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Friday Evening Talk\nDec 1st 7:00PM to 9:00PM PT\nSaturday and Sunday Non-Residential Retreat\nDec 2-3 9:00AM to 4:30PM PT\nFinding Delight In Practice\nDescription\nJoin us for a weekend with Guest Teacher Phillip Moffit.  There will be a Friday evening Online Program and a weekend Online retreat.  No registration is required for the Friday evening program.  Registration will be required for this weekend retreat. \nBy learning to orient more to the “felt sense” in your meditation practice\, you may discover a realm of experiences that are surprisingly available and delightful. We often have unrecognized tendencies of over-efforting and tension in our practice that makes it unnecessarily difficult and can even be in the way of concentration and insight developing. \nSometimes there is a kind of hidden structure in our practice that was formed by our expectations and doubts that prevent us from experiencing the possibility of ease in Vipassana meditation. \nThis weekend retreat is an opportunity to have a fresh experience of many of the dimensions of Insight practice. The invitation is for you to claim for yourself your innate and unrecognized capacities for realizing the dharma. \nAll levels of practitioners are welcome. \nTeacher Bio\nPhillip Moffitt is a Buddhist meditation teacher and writer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has taught Theravada Buddhism for over 25 years and served as co-guiding teacher at Spirit Rock Meditation Center from 2010 to 2018. Phillip is an honorary co-founder and the creator of the practice method that is the focus of the nonprofit organization Dharma Ground\, which offers online retreats and classes integrating the Nine Bodies map of consciousness and the Theravada Insight Meditation tradition. \nPhillip is also the founder and president of Life Balance Institute\, a nonprofit organization devoted to supporting individuals in developing the skills to live a values-based life with an emphasis on how to skillfully make major life transitions. \nHe is the author of three books: Awakening through the Nine Bodies\, Emotional Chaos to Clarity\, and Dancing with Life: Buddhist Insights for Finding Meaning and Joy in the Face of Suffering. He has written numerous articles about practicing the dharma in daily life for both Buddhist and yoga magazines.
