SUMMARY:Climate Action Group (Online)
DESCRIPTION:The Climate Action Group at Seattle Insight was started in May of 2018 by a few sangha members concerned about the climate crisis. We are interested in working within our sangha and from the ground of our Dharma practice to learn\, understand\, connect\, and with wise intention and view\, take appropriate actions. \nWe meet monthly and have sponsored several programs at Seattle Insight. We have an online bulletin board with our mission\, goals\, and meeting notes\, as well as a variety of resources to deepen understanding of the climate crisis and how to take meaningful action.  We offer “Practices for a livable planet” as one way to engage with the climate crisis as Buddhist practitioners. \nSigning up to be on our email list provides access to our bulletin board and monthly invitations to attend our meetings. If you are interested in getting on our email list\, please email Ken Yasuhara. If you would like more information about the group\, please contact Iris Antman.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Meditation Class Series (In-Person & Online)
DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation\, also known as mindfulness or vipassana meditation\, comes from the early Buddhist tradition. Through learning to bring a steady and spacious awareness to direct experience\, moment by moment\, the practice aims to free the mind from the distortions of self-centeredness\, negativity\, and confusion. Seeing life as a constantly changing process\, one begins to accept pleasure and pain\, fear and joy\, and all aspects of life\, with increasing balance\, compassion\, and freedom. \nThis six-week series offers participants teachings about what Insight Meditation is\, how it works\, and how to do it. The focus is on bringing insight and loving-kindness practices into daily life\, both on and off the meditation cushion.  Many people take the class more than once\, to refresh and strengthen their existing practice. \nThis class will include: \n\nGuided meditation instruction\nSitting and walking meditation practice\nMeditation posture and techniques\nTalks and guidance on understanding the principles of meditation\nGroup discussions\nWeekly practice suggestions\nDaylong meditation retreat (see date at top of the page)\n\nAll class dates are listed above. \nRegistration and Sliding Scale \nNote: Registration is required for this class\, and closes after the second class. Please register below. \nAffordability and access are at the heart of our values. No one is turned away for lack of funds. The “suggested” donation for the six-week series is $90\, which includes the day of mindfulness. A “supported” donation of $60 is also acceptable\, if this better fits your budget. If you wish to support another student’s registration fees\, you are invited to donate $120 for the series. You are welcome to offer what is right given your circumstances. \nPlease consider offering teacher dana\, a term for generosity\, during the course of the series. None of your registration donations go directly to the teacher. \nIf you need more information about this class series\, or if you have a question for the teacher\, please contact registrar@seattleinsight.org.

SUMMARY:Five Angles for Freedom (In-Person & Online)
DESCRIPTION:In this weekend workshop\, we will turn toward one of the Buddha’s most profound and liberating teachings: the Five Aggregates (skandhas). These five (form\, feeling\, perception\, mental formations\, and consciousness) describe the living flow of experience that we so often cling to as “me” and “mine.” \nWith care and curiosity\, we will explore how these aggregates arise moment by moment\, how they condition suffering\, and how they also can point the way to freedom. Through periods of guided meditation\, instruction\, questions\, and shared inquiry\, we will learn to recognize how the aggregates operate in daily life and how observing them can loosen habits of grasping\, aversion\, and confusion. \nThis workshop is suitable for both new practitioners and those with more experience who want to deepen their insight practice. By the end of the weekend\, participants will have practical tools for working with the aggregates on and off the cushion\, supporting greater clarity\, compassion\, and freedom in everyday life. \nBio\nAnushka Fernandopulle is a Spirit Rock Core Teacher who has trained for over 35 years in the Theravada Buddhist tradition. Anushka studied Buddhism at Harvard College and then spent four years in full-time Dharma and meditation training in monasteries and retreat centers in the US\, India and Sri Lanka. Anushka was invited to teach Dharma in 1998 and later graduated from a four year retreat teacher training program with Jack Kornfield\, Joseph Goldstein\, Sharon Salzberg\, Carol Wilson and other leading Western Buddhist meditation teachers from IMS and Spirit Rock. \nAnushka teaches retreats and workshops around the world\, including in South America\, Scandinavia and the United Kingdom. Her teaching is informed by nature\, creative arts\, political engagement and modern urban life. Anushka has taught Spirit Rock’s monthlong retreat\, Metta retreat and in multiyear study programs like Dedicated Practitioner’s Program and Advanced Practitioner’s Program. \nAnushka lives in San Francisco and also works as a leadership coach and management consultant\, influenced by a BA from Harvard\, an MBA from Yale and certification in professional Coaching. She has served on many nonprofit boards as well as serving as a mayoral appointee on a San Francisco City Commission. She has been engaged with movements for social justice and civil rights throughout her life. Her writing has been featured in publications like Tricycle\, Lion’s Roar\, Turning Wheel\, Inquiring Mind\, and the Huffington Post. \nQuestions\nFor questions about the retreat\, please contact registrar@seattleinsight.org. \nRegistration & Donation\nTeacher dana can be made via Venmo @AnushkaF or check to Anushka Fernandopulle \nDonations to Seattle Insight Meditation can be made here. SUMMARY:Monday Morning Metta (MMM)
DESCRIPTION:Many folks start their week with Monday\, so we’ll start it off with kindness\, care\, love\, and goodwill. A rotating cast of leaders (Temira\, Judith\, Adam\, and perhaps others) will offer up a variety of forms of metta. Each week we’ll have a 30 minute sit. Sometimes\, if the leader has time\, there will be space after for questions and reflections\, but that’s totally optional for all involved. We’re there to open our hearts and create some goodness together as a sangha before we head out into the world. All experience levels are welcome! \nRegistration & Donation \nRegistration is not needed for this event. Dana is a term for generosity\, or freely offered giving. You can read more and offer dana for both Seattle Insight and the teachers here.
