SUMMARY:Climate Action Group (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Description \nThe Climate Action Group at SIMS was started in May of 2018 by a few sangha members concerned about the climate crisis. We are interested in working within our sangha and from the ground of our Dhamma practice to learn\, understand\, connect\, and with wise intention and view\, take appropriate actions. \nWe meet monthly and have sponsored several programs at SIMS. We have an online bulletin board with our mission\, goals\, and meeting notes\, as well as a variety of resources to deepen understanding of the climate crisis and how to take meaningful action.  We offer “Practices for a livable planet” as one way to engage with the climate crisis as Buddhist practitioners\, and our Climate Buddies program (details below) connects sangha members for mutual support. \nSigning up to be on our email list allows access to our bulletin board and monthly invitations to attend our meetings. If you are interested in getting on our email list\, please email Ken Yasuhara. If you have questions and would like more information\, please contact Iris Antman.

SUMMARY:Introductory Meditation Class Series (In-Person & Online)
DESCRIPTION:This introductory meditation class meets weekly for 6 weeks\, April 9-May 14 from 7-9PM\, PDT. It will meet in a hybrid setting\, both In-Person and Online simultaneously. \nWhen you register\, you will be required to choose between In-Person and Online. \nClass registration includes a Day of Mindfulness the Saturday after the last class\, May 18th. Please see dates to be aware of below. \nAbout Insight Meditation\nInsight meditation also known as mindfulness or vipassana meditation comes from the Buddhist tradition. It aims to free the mind from the distortions of self-centeredness\, negativity\, and confusion. Seeing life as a constantly changing process\, one begins to accept pleasure and pain\, fear and joy\, and all aspects of life with increasing balance and equanimity. This balanced awareness\, grounded in the present moment\, leads to stillness and a growing understanding of the nature of life. Out of this seeing emerges wisdom and compassion. \nIt is a moment-to-moment investigation of the mind and body process. Our experience is explored from a balanced and spacious awareness which allows the heart to flower in love. During these six weeks there will be meditation instructions\, talks about the philosophy of the practice\, homework assignments\, and time for discussion and questions. \nDates to Be Aware Of\nYour registration includes attendance at a Day of Mindfulness on Saturday\, May 18\, 2024. \nPlease note that registrations are accepted up through the second class on April 16th. After that\, registration is closed. SIMS registration volunteers are available until the event’s start time. \nIf you have a question about this class series or for the teacher\, please contact registrar@seattleinsight.org \nRegistration and Donation\nThe suggested event donation is $90 for the six-week series including the Day of Mindfulness\, with options for $120 as a benefactor and $60 for a supported donation. Following our tradition\, none of this donation will go to the teacher. Please consider offering teacher dana at the event to support their livelihood. (Dana is a term for generosity\, or freely offered giving). No one is turned away for inability to offer a donation. Please use your best efforts to pay the suggested donation or another heartfelt amount. \nPlease register below. Since this is a series where each class builds on the previous ones\, registration is closed after the second class. A zoom link will be sent to all those who have registered. \nIf you choose to donate at time of event and this is an online class\, please go to our Donate Page. Instructions for mailing in a check are included there as well.

Below is a general statement about each: \nGenerosity: Having a willingness to open to all things\, to share with others and contemplate abundance. \nMorality: Being willing to undertake the training to live within the 5 precepts.\nRenunciation: Cultivating the capacity to abandon our attachments. \nWisdom: Being able to see or consider the implications of the 3 Characteristics in any experience. \nEnergy: Our level of willingness to participate in mental development. \nPatience: Cultivating the capacity to stop our resistance to the truth of an experience. \nTruthfulness: Paying attention to the truthfulness of words and actions. \nResolution: The degree in which we are willing to follow our aspiration to practice. \nLovingkindness: The willingness to connect with and care about other sentient beings. \nEquanimity: Being willing to consider phenomena outside our opinions and judgments. \nDuring our regular SIMS sits on Mondays\, Thursdays and Sundays\, we will explore the Buddha’s teachings on The Paramis. Please join us for this rich exploration. \nSpecial Note: The Thursday Night Sangha will continue to meet on Zoom indefinitely. Please click on the link below the large ZOOM link on the Thursday Night Sangha page.  It will change weekly so be sure to go back to the page before the meeting to get the right link.

SUMMARY:VESAK (In-Person & Online)
DESCRIPTION:Description\nTuere and Tim would like to personally invite you to our Vesak ceremony at Seattle Insight. Vesak is the most sacred holy day of Buddhism and is celebrated by Buddhist all over the world. It is a recognition of the birth\, awakening and final passing away of the historical Buddha. It is commonly referred to as Buddha’s day and is usually on the first full moon in May (the actual day varies each year). Lay practitioners traditionally observe the day by practicing the precepts\, bringing flowers and/or offerings to a temple\, meditating and listening to a dharma talk. It is generally thought of as a solemn occasion although many places have large secular parties\, parades\, and festivals (similar to Christmas or Easter). \nThis year we will celebrate Vesak on the 23rd when the full moon occurs. We will be holding a special meditation and ceremony. Please join us in observing this special ceremony. \nQuestions?\nIf you have questions about this event\, please contact webmaster@seattleinsight.org. \nRegistration & Donation\nRegistration is not needed for this event. The suggested event donation is $5\, plus teacher dana. (Dana is a term for generosity\, or freely offered giving.) Teacher dana can be offered at the event. Please use your best efforts to pay the suggested donation or another heartfelt amount. All are welcome regardless of ability to pay. \nDana for SIMS and the Teachers can be offered online at https://seattleinsight.org/Donate\, or in person at the ceremony.
