Introductory Meditation Class Series
An event every week that begins at 7:00 pm on Thursday, repeating until July 22, 2021
About Insight Meditation
Insight meditation also known as mindfulness or vipassana meditation comes from the Buddhist tradition. It aims to free the mind from the distortions of self-centeredness, negativity, and confusion. Seeing life as a constantly changing process, one begins to accept pleasure and pain, fear and joy, and all aspects of life with increasing balance and equanimity. This balanced awareness, grounded in the present moment, leads to stillness and a growing understanding of the nature of life. Out of this seeing emerges wisdom and compassion.
It is a moment-to-moment investigation of the mind and body process. Our experience is explored from a balanced and spacious awareness which allows the heart to flower in love. During these six weeks there will be meditation instructions, talks about the philosophy of the practice, homework assignments, and time for discussion and questions.

Registration and Donation
You are seeing something NEW here this time. SIMS is offering this class ONLINE and IN PERSON at University Friends Meeting House. We are capping attendance in person at 25 people. All people attending in person must register before 5:00 PM on June 16th (the day before class begins) so that our volunteers can be ready to check everyone in at UFM during the first night of class. No walk ins will be allowed. This will be a hybrid Zoom and in person class, so feel free to register for online as well. Online registrations are accepted until June 24th. All the registration choices are below.
Once you register to join in person, you will be redirected to a page where you must fill out a liability form. Please be sure and do this.
We’re asking that only vaccinated people attend in person. We encourage unvaccinated people to attend online, and we’re providing a viable online option. We’ll not ask your vaccination status but rather we’ll use the honor system. Your cooperation with these protocols, which include the wearing of masks and social distancing, is much appreciated
We are not providing mats and cushions at this time. If you want to sit on the floor please bring your own cushion or bench.
Suggested Event Donation
The suggested event donation is $90 for the six-week series including the Day of Mindfulness, with options for $120 as a benefactor and $60 for a supported donation. Following our tradition, none of this donation will go to the teacher. Please consider offering teacher dana at the event to support their livelihood. (Dana is a term for generosity, or freely offered giving). No one is turned away for inability to offer a donation. Please use your best efforts to pay the suggested donation or another heartfelt amount.*
Because the classes are currently on online via Zoom, you need to register online with a credit card* prior to the first or second class. Since this is a series where each class builds on the previous ones, registration is closed after the second class.
*If you need to use a check rather than a credit card, or wish to offer a different amount for the event donation, please indicate “donate at the event” in the payment section when you register. You can then donate through the “Donate” link on the SIMS website.
