DESCRIPTION:Description\nJoin us for a Dhamma talk followed by questions & answers with Ajahn Jayasāro at University Friends Meeting\, on Friday evening\, May 3rd\, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The event\, co-hosted by Seattle Insight Meditation Society and Clear Mountain Monastery represents a growing friendship.  Welcome! \nIf you are coming in person to UFM in Seattle\, please use the RSVP form above. After his initial five-year monastic training\, Ajahn Jayasaro went on extended solitary retreat before taking on teaching and administrative duties at Wat Pah Nanachat\, the monastery dedicated to the Western disciples of Ajahn Chah. Over the next several years he alternated between periods of retreat and service to his monastic lineage\, and was entrusted by his elders with writing the official biography of his teacher\, Ajahn Chah\, and serving as abbot of Wat Pah Nanachat. \nSince early 2003 Ajahn Jayasaro has been living in a hermitage at the foot of Khao Yai Mountain National Park\, giving regular teachings\, promoting the integration of Buddhist developmental principles into the Thai education system\, and serving as the spiritual director of several Buddhist schools and non-profit projects in Thailand. He is the author of “Stillness Flowing: The Life and Teachings of Ajahn Chah” among other books. You may find out more at https://www.jayasaro.panyaprateep.org/en/home. \nQuestions?\nIf you have questions about this event\, please contact webmaster@seattleinsight.org \nRegistration & Donation\nRSVP required for in-person attendance.  Please see above. \nIn the spirit of Dhamma\, all teachings are offered completely free of charge\, though those inspired may give in-person or online to SIMS or Friends of Clear Mountain.

SUMMARY:Introductory Meditation Class Series (In-Person & Online)
DESCRIPTION:This introductory meditation class meets weekly for 6 weeks\, April 9-May 14 from 7-9PM\, PDT. It will meet in a hybrid setting\, both In-Person and Online simultaneously. \nWhen you register\, you will be required to choose between In-Person and Online. \nClass registration includes a Day of Mindfulness the Saturday after the last class\, May 18th. Please see dates to be aware of below. \nAbout Insight Meditation\nInsight meditation also known as mindfulness or vipassana meditation comes from the Buddhist tradition. It aims to free the mind from the distortions of self-centeredness\, negativity\, and confusion. Seeing life as a constantly changing process\, one begins to accept pleasure and pain\, fear and joy\, and all aspects of life with increasing balance and equanimity. This balanced awareness\, grounded in the present moment\, leads to stillness and a growing understanding of the nature of life. Out of this seeing emerges wisdom and compassion. \nIt is a moment-to-moment investigation of the mind and body process. Our experience is explored from a balanced and spacious awareness which allows the heart to flower in love. During these six weeks there will be meditation instructions\, talks about the philosophy of the practice\, homework assignments\, and time for discussion and questions. \nDates to Be Aware Of\nYour registration includes attendance at a Day of Mindfulness on Saturday\, May 18\, 2024. \nPlease note that registrations are accepted up through the second class on April 16th. After that\, registration is closed. SIMS registration volunteers are available until the event’s start time. \nIf you have a question about this class series or for the teacher\, please contact registrar@seattleinsight.org \nRegistration and Donation\nThe suggested event donation is $90 for the six-week series including the Day of Mindfulness\, with options for $120 as a benefactor and $60 for a supported donation. Following our tradition\, none of this donation will go to the teacher. Please consider offering teacher dana at the event to support their livelihood. (Dana is a term for generosity\, or freely offered giving). No one is turned away for inability to offer a donation. Please use your best efforts to pay the suggested donation or another heartfelt amount. \nPlease register below. Since this is a series where each class builds on the previous ones\, registration is closed after the second class. A zoom link will be sent to all those who have registered. \nIf you choose to donate at time of event and this is an online class\, please go to our Donate Page. Instructions for mailing in a check are included there as well.

SUMMARY:Meditation Retreat with Tim Geil & Tuere Sala
DESCRIPTION:Notice: Retreat Full\, accepting waitlist.  \nIf you are still interested in attending\, please write to BIMs Retreats at this address: bimsretreats@gmail.com and they will let you know if an opening occurs! \nDates: April 14 – April 20\, 2024 – 6 night\, 7 day retreat at Samish Island\, Washington \nRegistration: This retreat is being sponsored by Bellingham Insight Meditation Society. In order to register\, you must download the registration materials using the link below\, fill out the registration form\, and mail it to BIMS. Please Note: SIMS is not handling the registration for this retreat. \nDownload Registration Materials Here \nCultivating Insight\nInsight meditation (vipassana in Pali\, the language of the original Buddhist teachings) is the simple and direct practice of moment-to-moment mindfulness. Through careful and sustained observation\, we experience for ourselves the ever-changing flow of the mind/body process. This awareness leads us to accept more fully the pleasure and pain\, fear and joy\, sadness and happiness that life inevitably brings. \nAs insight deepens\, we develop greater equanimity and peace in the face of change\, and wisdom and compassion increasingly become the guiding principles of our lives. \nThis retreat emphasizes quieting the mind\, opening the heart\, and developing clarity and depth of practice. Traditional instructions will be combined with a spirit of lovingkindness\, silent sitting and walking meditation\, Dharma talks\, and meetings with the teachers. This retreat is for experienced as well as newer students. This retreat will be held in Noble Silence except for teacher-led practice meetings. \nRetreat Description: This residential retreat will be held at a rural retreat center south of Bellingham. The retreat location is on the water and has extensive grounds for walking. All registrants will have a cabin to themselves. There will be three simple vegetarian meals a day. \nCost of Retreat: The cost of this retreat is $545.00 (U.S. funds only). The fees charged are used to pay Camp Samish costs for room and board. Any additional money is used for ongoing BIMS programs & expenses\, including scholarships. Please fill out the registration form and send with your check to the Registrar. PayPal may also be used for payments (see below). \nTeachings are offered freely. There will be opportunities to give dana to the teachers at the retreat. Dana may also be given using these links for both Tim and Tuere: PayPal or Venmo (@tim-geil) \nScholarships: If you require a scholarship\, we are happy to help. A limited number of scholarships are available; requests are honored in the order in which they are received. \nNO SCHOLARSHIPS CAN BE GRANTED WITHOUT CONTACTING THE REGISTRAR FIRST BY EMAIL.

SUMMARY:Meditation Walk at Seward Park
DESCRIPTION:Now that the weather is getting nicer again\, our Climate Action Group is planning another Meditation Walk in the ancient magical forest at Seward Park on April 13th\, Saturday from 1-3 p.m. \nWe will meet again in the meadow adjacent to Shelter #3 across the road from the trailhead. (There is a bathroom available.) We’ll have an initial circle\, offer a land acknowledgment\, followed by suggestions of intentions or ideas for contemplation as we walk through the forest. \nWe’ll walk silently in a loop for about 45 minutes\, returning to the starting place. After a blessing to close the walk\, we can break into smaller groups to share our reflections. Please bring snacks to share if you wish. We’ll come back into the full circle to share group reflections\, ending with a dedication of merit. Please join us for a precious time of deep connection with the natural world. \nThere is ample parking available\, but please carpool or take public transit\, if possible. Metro Bus 50 stops a block from the park entrance. We can arrange to pick up a limited number of people at the Columbia City light rail station. SUMMARY:All About Boundaries with Rodney Smith (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Description\nIn this nonresidential online weekend retreat\, we will explore how and why we conceptually impose internal and external boundaries upon a world that is naturally boundary free. Each time we draw a line of demarcation internally (my body\, my mind\, my persona) or externally (others\, the external world\, nature) we establish a narrowing definition of ourselves while increasing our psychic distance from others. We believe we gain control by establishing boundaries but are usually unaware of how it restrains and limits our freedom. \nJoin Rodney on this two-day exploration of boundaries\, which will also explore the sanity of setting healthy personal boundaries and establishing principled ethical limits. The weekend will include dharma talks\, silent and guided meditations\, Q & A sessions\, and Qigong with Ellen. \nAbout Rodney Smith\nRodney Smith is a retired Insight Meditation Society (IMS) guiding teacher and retired founding and guiding teacher of the Seattle Insight Meditation Society (SIMS). A former Buddhist monk and hospice director\, he has taught meditation for over 35 years and is the author of Lessons from the Dying; Stepping Out of Self-Deception: The Buddha’s Liberating Teaching of No-Self; Awakening: A Paradigm Shift of the Heart; and Touching the Infinite: A New Perspective on the Buddha’s Four Foundation of Mindfulness. He teaches more sparingly now and spends much of his day in quiet. \nQuestions\nFor questions about the retreat\, please contact registrar@seattleinsight.org \nRegistration & Donation\nRegistration for this Retreat is required. The suggested event donations are listed below\, plus teacher dana. Dana is a term for generosity\, or freely offered giving. Dana for SIMS can be offered on our website on the Donate page. \nTo offer Dana to Rodney\, please use the this link: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/SIMSFounder. A check may also be sent to SIMs.

SUMMARY:Eastside Introductory Meditation Class Series (In-Person & Online)
DESCRIPTION:This introductory meditation class meets weekly for 6 weeks\, January 17-February 21 from 7-9PM\, PDT. It will meet in a hybrid setting\, both In-Person and Online simultaneously. \nWhen you register\, you will be required to choose between In-Person and Online. \nClass registration includes a Day of Mindfulness the Saturday after the last class\, February 24th. \nDates to Be Aware Of\nYour registration includes attendance at a Day of Mindfulness on Saturday\, February 24\, 2024. \nPlease note that registrations are being accepted up through the second class on January 24thw. SIMS registration volunteers are available until the event’s start time. Registration closes at the start of the event.
