with John Mifsud

6/17/2017 10:00 AM  4:00 PM at Seattle Insight Meditation Center, (2729 6th Ave. S., Seattle, 98134) (Map It)

Clearing the Mind is for both experienced and new meditators. We will explore practical techniques that increase deep relaxation and steady concentration.  Simple, how-to tools will combine with traditional Buddhist teachings to strengthen calm abiding in meditation practice. Participants are encouraged to attend the entire Friday evening/Saturday event as the teachings will build upon each other.

We will investigate The Five Hindrances; Body Scans, Mantras and Creative Visualizations; Single Pointed Concentration, Moment to Moment Awareness and the Luminous Mind.

Saturday morning, John will explore a variety of techniques that focus on mindfulness of the body as a means to increasing concentration.  The Buddha said, “In this fathom-long body, all of the dharma is revealed.”  John will provide a guided meditation that will usher attendees through the experiential use of body scans that can lead to relaxation and calm abiding.  The morning will also include experiential exercises illustrating how Mantras and Creative Visualizations can deepen meditation practice.

Saturday afternoon will begin with a brief exploration of what may stand in the way of calm abiding in meditation.  Attendees will be offered the opportunity to both name and further understand the hindrances that seem prevalent in their practice as well as antidotes we can work with to ensure our meditation practices thrive.  The afternoon will include a brief talk about how the Buddha’s teachings on the Divine Abodes can likewise help clear the mind and increase calm abiding followed by a period of meditation practice.  Several helpful handouts will be shared with attendees as well as experiential exercises to demonstrate the many techniques available to practitioners that can refresh and keep their meditation practice vital.
